In a significant move to enhance electoral inclusivity, the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) has unveiled “Postal Vote BD,” a new system designed to enable Bangladeshi citizens living abroad to cast their votes in national elections. This initiative, facilitated through a dedicated mobile application, marks a major step towards ensuring the democratic participation of the large and influential expatriate community.
The “Postal Vote BD App” system will allow non-resident Bangladeshis to register as voters and cast their ballots through a postal system integrated with modern technology. The primary objective is to remove the geographical barriers that have historically disenfranchised millions of citizens residing overseas, who are significant contributors to the nation’s economy.

13th Bangladesh National Election 2026
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin has officially announced the schedule for the 13th National Parliamentary Election. The voting will take place on February 12. A public referendum on the “July National Charter” will also be held on the same day. Voting will continue without a break from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
Voters and Participation: There are over 127.6 million voters in this election. For the first time, expatriate Bangladeshis can vote via postal ballot. Over 300,000 expatriates have already registered. Currently, 56 parties are registered with the Election Commission. However, the Awami League cannot participate because their registration is suspended. Independent candidates are eligible to run.
Context and Security: This election comes 16 months after the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus took charge. The timeline aligns with agreements made between Dr. Yunus and BNP leader Tarique Rahman. To manage the two votes (election and referendum) on the same day, voting time has been extended by one hour. The government will deploy nearly 900,000 security personnel to ensure safety. This is the highest number ever used for an election. Additionally, 150,000 police officers have been specially trained for this event.
Critical Updates
Excluded Parties: The Awami League remains banned from political activities and contesting the election under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Simultaneous Referendum: Voters will cast two ballots on February 12, 2026: one for their parliamentary representative and one for a National Referendum to ratify the “July Charter” (a package of constitutional reforms and institutional changes).
Announcement: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin officially announced the detailed schedule on the evening of December 11, 2025, following final consultations with the President and Chief Justice.
